Chainlink VRF is a named instance of a verifiable random function. This is a tech page, not an operator page and not a casino. The concept pages stay at the Issue 1 slugs.
What it is
A service that returns random values plus a cryptographic proof, published and verified onchain before a consuming contract is allowed to use the number. First-party docs call it a “provably fair and verifiable random number generator.” On this encyclopedia, “provably fair” still means a checkable transcript, not kindness and not a licence.
The construction is meant so no single party (oracle operator, contract developer, user, miner, block builder) can pick the result. Their own footnote: if an adversary compromised the VRF secret key and could construct blocks on the target chain, they could strongly bias the result.
Current docs push VRF v2.5 (migrate from v2). Two request methods on supported networks this pass:
- Subscription — fund a subscription (LINK or native); multiple consumers; cost deducted after fulfilment.
- Direct funding — the consuming contract pays at request time.
A same-transaction “roll” is not how this works: request, wait, verify, then the consumer may use the number. That delay is the point against peek-and-reroll on public state.
What it does not prove
A verified VRF output is not a kind game, not a licence, not studio RNG, and not commit-reveal. It does not mean the player contributed entropy. It does not make an NFT wrapper fully onchain. It does not rank Chainlink against other VRF vendors. Who holds the key remains a design question. Blockhash is still not a die.
